You've Got Mail

Customary Etiquette for Mailing Stationery

Announcements & Invitation Etiquette

When should I mail my invitation?

The following times are generally accepted guidelines:

  • Wedding Invitations 6-8 weeks
  • Destination Wedding Invitations 4-6 months
  • Wedding Save the Date Cards 3-4 months
  • Formal Balls or Parties (charity, debutante, bar or bat mitzvahs) 3-6 weeks
  • Baby Shower Invitations 3-6 weeks
  • All other Party Invitations anywhere from 1-4 weeks, depending on the formality of the occasion; the more formal the occasion, the longer the lead time.

What pieces require extra postage?

Square envelopes require a surcharge of $.13. Also, pieces mailed in tubes, letters thicker than ¼”, and large envelopes thicker than ¾” also require extra postage. Check at www.usps.com for more information.

When do I use an RSVP card?

For a wedding, an RSVP card is typically only sent to invitees of the ceremony and the reception or reception only.

Thank You Notes

What are acceptable time frames to send thank you notes?

Within a week after receiving the gift is customary, whether it’s for a baby shower, a child’s birthday present, or hosts for an overnight stay.

When should I send a hand-written thank you note?

Always send one for a wedding, host/hostess gift, or shower gift. It’s generally recommended to send one for birthday, anniversary, holiday, congratulatory gifts, yet optional if the person was there for you to personally thank.

Addressing Envelopes

How do I properly address the outer envelope?

Always write out the names and addresses completely, including the names of children who are invited. Don’t use abbreviations except in the titles (i.e., Mr. Mrs., Ms. Dr., etc.) and don’t use periods or commas.

What names do I include on the envelope?

Include everyone you’re inviting, and use separate invitations for teenagers or adults living in the same household. When inviting unmarried couples who live together, list each name separately on a single invitation.

Is it okay to use labels?

No. Hand-written or professionally printed addressing is most acceptable.

Change of Address

When do I notify the post office of my moving date?

The US postal service recommends submitting a change of address card at least one month before your moving date.
